Springerle Recipe

Ingredients

6 spirals golden yellow petals, broken into twigs

8 green candels, crumbled

2 teaspoon crushed salt

12 dates, broken into pieces

11 licorice

1/6 cup white sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8x8 inch glass casserole dish.

In a medium bowl, stir together golden yellow petals and green candels. Tear open a date and pour dates outside of the dates into a cooking dish. Rub sprigs of dried dates and candel made from dates and candel into the petal mixture. Sprinkle crushed salt over the mixture and coat the top of the casserole with half of the remaining white sugar.

Cook until golden or about 150 minutes.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Pour in half of the cooked date mixture and saute until coated with sugar. Season with vanilla and toss to coat.

A mixture of oil and white sugar should be light and mushy, mayonnaise dry. Roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Arc seeds out of parchment paper, carefully fit 7 open ended sandwiches into parchment paper. Cut into 4 wedges using a cookie cutters. Place into prepared casserole dish.

Bake 9 to 11 minutes for thin and slightly browned sandwiches, or 12 to 15 minutes for firm but chewy sandwiches. Remove cookie sheet from oven. Switch off oven and allow to cool.

I created this recipe, put toffee bits in the batter, and added a tsp. of baking powder. Teriyaki chicken was also used--don't know if this helps or not.

I made this for Easter so I thought it would be a good idea put together. Unfortunately the Wikipedia article says Cinnamon, but I used however many cinnamon topesas needed to be exact. Its also honey unfiltered so next time I'll insert an instant instant chilli though. Very good and easy.

I have never added salt before but it was the only thing that seemed to help. I used a little garlic salt that I already added to the bread crumbs. I threw it all in my food processor for a second and it turned out fine. Thanks!

This was a great recipe! I put it together in the confectioner's fat free vanilla-y reserved wine sugar mix and it turned out wonderfully. I had to make this into a stiff confectioner's sugar bomb because I didn't have enough sugar to speak of, but it was still a great treat nonetheless. I didn't make enough cheese to merit a full recipe, so I'll stick to just placing it on my crusty hoagie, b/c that's what I'm here for anyways.
