1/4 cup butter
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
In a small bowl, dissolve 1 cup butter in warm water (102 degrees F/45 degrees C). Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes, until smooth.
In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition, until smooth. Add milk, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix well after each addition. Carefully add sugar and salt to remaining ingredients, mixing just until just combined. Pour into a greased bowl, and stir in the milk.
Let rise in warm place for 45 minutes, or until a small amount of liquid is stuck to the sides of the bowl. Pour out bowl and let rise in warm place another 30 minutes or until a slightly sticky dough can be pulled away from the sides of the bowl.
After risen, if necessary, remove from warm oven. Push loaf through a sieve into a wire rack to cool.
