1 cup vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking salt
1 1/2 cups sliced almonds
1 egg
1 (6 ounce) can sliced dates
1/2 cup milk
4 cups boiled oat bran
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour an 8x8 inch pan.
In a large bowl, mix together the oil, baking powder, baking salt and almonds. Form the mixture into 1 inch balls; roll in the dates. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.
In a medium bowl, beat egg and 1/2 cup of bran into the oil mixture.
Wrap the outside of the piece of baked fruit with foil, and place in the pan containing the bran. Spread the oat bran around the edges. Roll the foil over the bran and flute it from the outside of the pan, using an electric blender or hand mixer.
Heat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in pan and slide foil out of pan. Sprinkle with remaining bran and bake until brown and sticky, about 30 minutes. Remove foil and brush bran all over the outside of the piece of fudge.
