Old Time Bread Recipe

Ingredients

2 teaspoons butter

1 cup bread flour

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 tablespoon cooked yeast

1 tablespoon white sugar

1 egg

6 slices white bread

3 tablespoons grated orange zest

1 tablespoon butter

1 (12 ounce) package instant green bread pudding mix

1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

Directions

Place the butter in a small saucepan and beat just until moistened. Stir in the flour, baking powder, yeast mixture and sugar. Gradually stir in the egg and mix with the flour mixture until blended. Cover pan and let stand for 30 minutes to allow the yeast to stir.

Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Place a sheet of waxed paper on the bottom of the pan. Fill the plastic wrap with pizza sauce; wrap tightly with aluminum foil for easier removal.

Meanwhile, to make the bread pudding mix: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, egg and butter until smooth. Stir the leftover mixture into the brown sugar mixture and allow to cook while kneading. When the mixture is thoroughly mixed, fold in the gelatin. Bring the water along with all ingredients until all ingredients are combined.

Place both the mold and Ivertime ingredients into the pan of the loaf pan. Cover the top of the pan tightly with foil and allow the bread to stand for about 15 minutes.

Return loaf to pan and place on a platter. Cover tightly with foil and let stand overnight at room temperature. Turn loaf every morning and place on a wire rack to cool overnight. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

When bread is cool, cool slightly in the pan of the loaf pan. Plop top of loaf into a large resealable plastic bag or bowl. Drizzle with white icing and sprinkle with oranges, orange zest and butter. Place plastic wrap around surface of loaf and seal tightly while baking. Twist plastic bag to secure tightly and place loaf in a lightly greased 9x13-inch (2 to 3-inch) pan.

Cover foil and allow loaf to rise in a warm place 2 to 3 hours, or until firm.

While loaf is rising, make the icing: in a small bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups sugar and 2 teaspoons butter. Make a well in the center and pour in the remaining 1/2 cup butter until mixture resembles the consistency of breakfast mix. Beat until soured and baked. Remove from pan and warm the icing in microwave oven.

Gently spoon the pudding over warm loaf to make a smooth spread. Serve warm or cold.
