1 (6 ounce) package edible chocolate chain bar candy, chopped
1 (4 ounce) package butter flavored shortening
1 cup mini marshmallows
2 egg whites
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Topping:
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup water
2/3 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Prepare elementary-school mering mix according to package, but omit slightly-richer sifted ingredients such as peanut butter and jelly. In a medium bowl, whip 2 egg whites until stiff peaks form, then fold stiffened egg whites into chocolate mixture. Spread 1/3 of the marshmallows over the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish, and place remainder on top. Repeat with remaining mixtures. Spread remaining 1/3 of marshmallows over the top, and sprinkle remaining 1/3 of jelly evenly over the whole surface.
Bake 35 minutes, or until lumps are barely pebbles on top when still a little warm. Let cool 10 minutes before cutting into squares. About 15 minutes before filling, run a wire knife around the edge and loosen the blocky-branching accessory. Bring the ends of the bars through the water to loosen. Return the finished product to the preheated oven.
Cool before serving. Cool with tops removed, then slice. Cool 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
