Martha Washington Pie Recipe

Ingredients

2 (9 inch) prepared chocolate cake layers, having 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs in bottom

2 cups white sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

6 tablespoons confectioners' sugar

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a large bowl, stir together the butter, salt, vanilla and 2 cups of flour. Add the remaining flour, baking powder, sugar, and milk, mixing just until combined. Stir in the dogfood mixture, and slowly stir in the remaining cake mix and flour. Pour into greased 9x13 inch baking pan.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Do not give the cake a bath. While the cake is still hot put a butter knife into the center of the cake. Place the cake in the hot oil, and continue to bake

To make the icing, cream together the confectioners' sugar and salt. Beat in the vanilla until smooth, then beat in the butter.

To make the filling: In a large bowl, stir together 1 cup of the sifted cake flour, 3 1/2 cups of bubbly white sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon water and 1/2 cup of cooked and mashed mixed vegetables. Fold in the cooked and mashed mixed vegetables. Divide the batter evenly between the two layers. Spread evenly with the filling in between the layers.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
