1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup water
3/8 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons milk
2 cups rolled oats
1 1/4 cups rolled semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large bowl, stir together baking soda, water and shortening. Add sugar, eggs, milk and oats until well blended. Mix thoroughly. Stir in chocolate chips by hand if using house brand candies. Drop cookies by 3/8 cupfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
