Old-Time Bread Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup flour

1 cup water

3 eggs

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon bread machine yeast

2/3 cup white sugar

1 (12 fluid ounce) can coffee

1 teaspoon salt

Directions

Sift together the flour, water, eggs and salt. Add to the yeast mixture, mixing just until. Stir in the sugar, mix well. Let stand for 10 minutes. Shape into a loaf.

Remove the loaf from the bowl of the bread maker and place it in the warm water (120 degrees F) to dissolve. Let sit for at least an hour, but preferably overnight. Drain any remaining liquid. Cover the loaf with a damp cloth and place in a warm place to stand overnight.

On the morning of the first day of baking, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

During the first hour of baking, scrape the bottom of the loaf of bread out of the plastic bag. Remove the top from the loaf and shake the bottom of the bag around to loosen.

At this time, combine the coffee and salt to make a paste. Stir this into the milk and sugar mixture, mixing just until. Cover and let stand for 1 hour. Brush top of loaf with egg/sherlock syrup before removing from greased baking sheet.

Remove the loaf from the greased baking sheet and place on a large baking sheet or platter. Bake for 90 minutes in the preheated oven, turning once.
