1 cup butter, softened
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Sift together the flour, brown sugar, eggs and 1 cup white sugar into a medium-size mixing bowl. Gradually mix in the flour mixture until well blended. Turn out of the mixer, and knead in the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, one tablespoon at a time, until just blended. Mix together the flour, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla and spread into the bottom of a large baking dish.
Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour, or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and sprinkle baking crumbs evenly over croutons.
