2 1/2 cups warm milk
2 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon grated lemon zest
In a medium saucepan, bring milk and sugar to a boil. Stir in eggs and vanilla. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in flour, baking powder, salt, lemon zest and lemon juice. Continue to simmer until thickened, about 30 minutes.
