Charella Creole Casserole Recipe

Ingredients

-- 8 slices white bread

2 teaspoons white sugar

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vegetable oil

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions

Place bread slices in a bowl and beat with pan cleaver or knife until evenly brown; serve.

Combine bread, white sugar, nutmeg, baking soda, brown sugar, lemon juice and oil in large bowl using an electric mixer. Dip bread strips and turn each. Spoon mixture into 9 1/2 quart mold and refrigerate overnight.

Meanwhile, refrigerate brined casserole mixture. Remove dish from fridge. Cover and refrigerate 40 minutes. Top each meat and cheese strip with prosciutto, onion and garlic. Arrange in a single layer on 4 to 6 baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 15 to 20 minutes.
