1/2 cup milk
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons lemon zest
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup bread flour
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon lemon zest
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 10x15 inch loaf pan.
In a large bowl, beat the milk, margarine, eggs, vanilla extract and sugar until smooth. Stir in lemon zest.
In a small bowl, place flour and baking soda into the milk mixture. Mix together with your hands, then pour batter mixture into pan.
Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Cool slightly before removing from oven. Serve warm.
To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the margarine, eggs, lemon zest and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gradually stir the flour into the milk mixture until a sticky dough has formed. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, place them on two ungreased baking sheets, and roll in sugar.
Bake for an additional 60 to 90 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown. Cool and serve warm or cold.
