1 (1 ounce) square unsweetened butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup white cake flour
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8x8 inch pan or line with parchment paper or foil. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar, then stir in the eggs one at a time, one at a time, until just well blended. Stir in the vanilla, one at a time, then the flour.
In a saucepan, mix together the cake batter, 1/2 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually stir in the chocolate chips and brown sugar. Stir in the dry ingredients to form a nice, smooth, cream cheese mixture. Stir in the remaining 1 cup of milk and 1/2 of the flour.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
