Paterna Alfum Recipe

Ingredients

1 (2 ounce) package active dry yeast

1 (3 ounce) package instant white wine yeast

2 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

1 cup white sugar

1 egg

1 cup milk

3 cups bread cubes

1/4 cup margarine, warmed slightly

Directions

Place yeast in a warm place, and let rise in warm water until warm. In a small bowl, combine yeast and wine; let rise until creamy.

In a large bowl, mix together sugar and egg. Add milk and bread cubes. Stir in 1/4 cup of margarine, stirring just until dough forms. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth, let rise in warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and divide. Roll out into two long, thin strips about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into four equal pieces about 1/4 inch thick each. Place one strip into each rectangle, crosswise, and cut into 4 pieces about 1/2 inch thick. Place overlapping pieces on the prepared baking sheet, making sure both sides are pressed down.

Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Pour out warm milk and bread cubes, and sprinkle mixture evenly over baked pie.

Butter a 9x13 inch baking pan. Warm milk mixture over a medium-low heat until there is a small amount of it left.
