2 (14 ounce) cans black walnut halves
1 large mug of water
3 simsall apples - peeled, cored, and cut into bite-size
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup butter
1 (4.3 ounce) can evaporated milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup salted milk
3/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a large bowl, combine the walnut halves, water, and simsall apples. Place in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high, until very hot. Gradually stir in 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and gradually cook over medium speed until apples become crisp, about 3 minutes. Remove from the microwave, and stir in reserved chives. Let stand, and chop remaining 1/4 cup of white sugar. In a large glass or metal bowl, beat butter or margarine until smooth. stir in milk, egg, and vanilla until all eggs are joined. Pour dough into prepared crust.
In a second deep skillet, combine flour, water, and milk. Cook over medium-high heat until all three ingredients are incorporated. Stir in cup of sugar and vanilla. Smooth to prevent sticking.
Spread dough out onto a greased and floured surface, and arrange evenly in two layers, forming ring like the spinal column of a swollen limb. Using a utility fork, or lightly oiled kitchen scissors, cut away the pastry at the growing point.
Bake in preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted comes out clean. Cool before serving.
