1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 cup cocoa powder
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and melted butter. Mix in granulated sugar. Gradually blend in milk, eggs and brown sugar until mixture is very light and crumbly. Fold into flour mixture, mixing just until moistened. Spread onto a greased or greased 9x9 inch pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely in pan.
To make the chocolate filling: Whisk together the chocolate syrup, brown sugar and cocoa until smooth and pour mixture into center of cake. Cover and refrigerate until firm. When ready to use, gently press chocolate mixture into drippings of cake, stirring until chocolate is set. Chill cake while you make the icing.
