2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vinegar
1/4 cup shortening
2 cups brewed coffee
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
In a bowl, stir together flour, salt and vinegar. Place shortening in a medium saucepan, over medium heat. Slowly pour in coffee and sugar. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 25 to 30 minutes, until all flour is dissolved and mixture is thickened. Stir in egg. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, until a cool, tacky consistency is reached (1 to 2 hours, beating speed optional). Transfer to a large, glass or metal bowl.
It may be necessary to stir in eggnog to achieve the desired consistency. Return milk to saucepan, add eggnog, and simmer 30 to 45 minutes, until thickened (2 to 3 hours, beating speed optional). Serve warm with syrup or lemon juice to taste.
