A unanimous vote by the Senate ended a 10-year effort to keep the issue from getting out of hand.

Ingredients

The bill that died in the House received its final vote today, 246-45. The bill had been referred to the House committee on public safety and had been expected to be introduced later this week.

While decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana was not the bill's main purpose, decriminalizing possession of a small amount of marijuana in the home was an important part of the bill's overall narrative.

Senators who voted for the bill included:

• Sen. Braden C. Berwick (R)

• Sen. Margaret S. Meloy (D)

• Sen. Mary Pat McKinney (D)

• Sen. Sandra Schembri (R)

• Sen. Robert W. Germond (D)

• Sen. Bob Pustin (R)

Andrea Schembri

Marijuana possession is a federal crime, punishable by a fine of up to $250,000.
