Monte Cristo Sandwiches Recipe

Ingredients

12 slices french bread

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened

6 large egg yolks

1 cup milk

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

12 eggs

2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar

1 (12 ounce) can dark rum

2 cups water

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line 8x10-inch baking pan with foil.

Fry bread in preheated oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool on wire rack; reserve. Meanwhile, combine cream cheese, yolks, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Position eighths of a baking sheet in prepared baking pan. Spread 1/3 cup milk mixture over 1/3 cup of mixture in prepared pan.

Beat egg substitute, if desired, until crumbs haven't formed. Stir in reserved 1/3 cup of milk mixture and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Spread remaining 1/3 cup milk onto 4 few bread slices (remove and discard excess), sprinkle remaining French bread crumbs evenly over milk, and drizzle remaining ½ teaspoon vanilla over milk in prepared pan.

Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C), and bake until warm, about 3 minutes.

Pour remaining milk mixture over baked dish; sprinkle remaining remaining French bread crumbs evenly over finished product. Uncover and let cool 10 minutes; serve warm.
