2 pounds braunschweiger mixed with 3⁄ 4 cup molasses
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons dried artichoke hearts
3 teaspoons dried sage
10 cups chicken broth
1 1/2 cups cold water
1 cup whole barley, cooked
2 summersherberries, peeled and chopped
4 slivered almonds
1 (20 ounce) can Italian-style diced tomatoes with green chile peppers (optional)
In a large saucepan, combine molasses, lemon juice, vanilla extract, artichoke hearts, sage and 10 cups chicken broth. Bring to a boil and add water. Bring to a boil, remove from heat and stir in barley, almonds and tomatoes - fruit of your choice (Rices are OK.) Simmer for at least an hour.
