1 (18.25 ounce) can vanilla wafer cookies
1 (13 ounce) can evaporated milk
3 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
4 egg whites
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease and flour 2 (9 inch) round pans. Stir together the flour and baking powder; set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sifted and sugar until smooth. Beat in the baking soda, oil, eggs and vanilla until blended. Mix in the dry ingredients alternately with the flour mixture until well blended. Beat in the chopped walnuts and egg whites. Pour batter into prepared pans.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
