1 pound ground pork sausage
2 (16 ounce) cans tomato sauce
1 large red onion, cut into 1/4 inch slices
2 teaspoons garlic powder
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups uncooked white rice
In a large skillet, cook sausage until evenly brown. Stir in tomato sauce and orange juice. Reduce heat to medium-low and add water. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the rice and pepper powder. Top the skillet with a layer of tomato sauce and vegetable oil. Melt the water and salt.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, add the meat mixture and cook for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low and stir in the rice and flavoring.
Return the skillet to medium heat and add water. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and continue cooking for about 5 minutes, stirring once. Transfer the meat mixture to a large bowl or platter. Discard any leftover meat as well as the remaining tomato sauce.
Good variety of ingredients. Good flavor. I used olive oil instead of shortening.
