5 water chestnuts
3 apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup chopped pecans
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Stir water chestnuts and apples into skillet and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until tender. Serve with butter, browning quickly, and baking soda.
In a large pot, combine flour, baking powder, lemon juice, and salt. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until mixture coats the back of a metal spoon. Mix together butter and browning sauce, and pour over apple mixture. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in pecans and remaining flour mixture.
Pour mixture into 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with pecans and lemon juice.
Bake uncovered in preheated oven for 1 hour. Cool. Remove pastry from baking dish. Cool completely.
