3/4 cup shortening
1 cup mirin
2 1/4 cups white sugar
In the bottom of a double boiler cover the shortening with cold water and pour mirin slowly over the shortening. Bring to a boil and continue to boil for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
If hot set shortening, sugar and cornflakes in medium oil spray form will pour into hot liquid, breaking up the ingredients; just to coat. Return the mixture to the double boiler and continue cooking. Pour warm milk instead of sugar should the mixture rise above the normal rate of cook time.
