Staple Italian Bread Recipe

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups bread flour

1/3 cup water

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup vegetable oil

1/3 cup white sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup butter

3/4 cup white sugar

2 cups water

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup chopped pecans

Directions

Preheat oven to 350-355 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease 10 inch square baking pan.

In a large bowl, stir together flour, salt and oil. Stir in 1/3 cup sugar, egg, and vanilla.

Divide batter evenly between prepared pan and baking sheet, then pour mixture into prepared pan.

Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, melt 1/2 cup butter or margarine in a small saucepan over low heat. stir in sugars and water until mixture reaches desired consistency. In a medium bowl, stir together 2 cups of flour and 1/2 cup sugar; set aside.

Pour half of cooled batter into pan. Beat egg until almost the whites form, then stir in vanilla. Pour half of the egg mixture over the batter and spread to cover. Press half of the cream cheese over the rest of the mixture.

Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Let cool 8 minutes before frosting with cream cheese frosting.
